Remarkable fiscal achievements in record time: Tax revenues reach unprecedented heights

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The National Director of Tax Revenues, Óscar Orué, announced the institution’s «quick remarkable results.» He disclosed that this year’s tax collection had reached $4.4 billion, with the most significant surge occurring in the past four months.

The recorded revenues surpass those of the previous year by over $250 million (6%), and Orué emphasized the goal of achieving a $400 million annual increase in tax collections. In a conversation with a local radio station, he highlighted that this achievement positions the National Directorate of Tax Revenues (DNIT) to achieve a historic record in tax collection this year.

During a recent evaluation event for this year’s accomplishments, the General Director announced that the DNIT is set to achieve an all-time high in tax collection. He underscored that the fusion of Taxation and Customs, in terms of revenue collection, vindicates President Santiago Peña, who, before taking office, asserted that accelerating the formalization process through a synergistic merger of the two institutions was essential to improve revenue without raising or introducing new taxes.

Orué explained that in the first 100 days of President Santiago Peña’s administration, there was a $112 million increase in tax collection. Moreover, there was a surplus of $45 million in October compared to the same month in 2022.

The DNIT head highlighted the construction of a fairer tax system, with higher contributions to the treasury from higher-income sectors, as a significant achievement. This is evident in the revenue composition, with 55.1% coming from direct taxes, a departure from historical reliance on indirect taxes.

He added that the merger facilitated seamless online data exchange between Taxation and Customs. The lifting of banking secrecy, the incorporation of new technologies, and staff training significantly strengthened the fight against tax evasion, smuggling, and drug trafficking.

«For 2024, we will establish simpler procedures through technology without compromising control. We will also continue with electronic invoicing, aiming to expand to 40,000 users of this system; currently, there are almost 2,500,» he further stated.
