Peña confirms that Paraguay will nominate Foreign Minister Ramírez Lezcano as a candidate for Secretary General of the OAS

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Paraguay will nominate the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, as a candidate for Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) to generate changes that the multilateral system requires by current times, confirmed the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña.

«Paraguay requests changes to the multilateral system; from the United Nations down, we believe that the multilateral system no longer responds to the needs of our countries, our regions,» said Peña.

In this context, the Head of State ratified the need to promote these changes and, above all, be «parties and protagonists.»

«We have a firm position, and we believe that changes must be made; we do not just want to ask for changes, but we want to generate them; we want to be parties and protagonists,» said the President in an interview with the Colombian channel NTN24.

In the interview, Peña confirmed that Paraguay would propose the candidacy of Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano for the succession of Luis Almagro as Secretary General of the Organization of American States.

«It was precisely here in Paraguay 10 years ago where the candidacy began that later led to his appointment as Secretary General of the OAS,» the President recalled, alluding to Almagro’s position.

The 54th General Assembly of the OAS, which takes place this week in the Paraguayan capital, Asunción, is the last of Luis Almagro as Secretary General of the aforementioned international organization.
