Future green hydrogen plant in Villeta secures 100% production purchase

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Atome Energy has announced the signing of a long-term commercial agreement with Yara International ASA to purchase 100% of the production from a hydrogen plant project in the city of Villeta.

This agreement makes the financial plan viable, allowing the company to seek financing to start construction before the end of the year, as reported by Atome Energy’s representative in Paraguay, James Spalding.

In a press conference alongside government officials, Spalding stated that the company will collaborate with multilateral organizations, including BID Invest, to achieve the planned USD 500 million investment as part of the sustainable production projects being promoted in Paraguay.

The hydrogen production plant will be located about 30 kilometers from Villeta’s urban center and will directly employ approximately 1,300 people during construction and another 1,100 once operational.

It is estimated that fertilizer production from hydrogen will begin in 2027. In early June, the completion of the technical study for the plant’s construction was announced; meanwhile, Atome Energy already has an agreement with ANDE for energy provision. “The plant will demand 4% of the current energy consumption,” Spalding indicated.

Vision of a green Paraguay

Rediex Deputy Minister Rodrigo Maluff highlighted that investment is essential in positioning the country as a platform for sustainable production. This aligns with the government’s vision of a Paraguay that leads to investments in low-environment-impact projects.

For his part, Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy Mauricio Bejarano noted that the significant investment will advance plans to leverage electric energy and diversify the country’s productive matrix.
