IACHR concludes visits to review compliance in Indigenous communities in Chaco

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The delegation of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR), headed by its vice president, Judge Rodrigo Mudrovitsch, concluded yesterday the visits made to Sawhoyamaxa, Yakye Axa, and Xákmok Kásek communities in the Paraguayan Chaco, within the framework of its mission to review compliance with sentences.

During three days of work, the IACHR delegation visited the Indigenous communities and spoke with their leaders about the families’ situation and the progress of reparations by the Paraguayan State in compliance with the sentences issued by the international body.

«I think they have been essential for the communities mainly, where we were able to see with our own eyes the reality of the communities,» said Judge Mudrovitsch after the last visit yesterday to the Xákmok Kásek community.

«We are very pleased. I believe that important changes have occurred that will be assessed by the Court. There are also pending points that will be assessed,» said the representative of the IACHR.

In the Xákmok Kásek community, the IACHR judge highlighted that the State has already given the title of ownership to 70% of the traditional lands, and some actions have been taken regarding infrastructure for the provision of basic services.

Yesterday, in the Yakye Axa community, Judge Mudrovitsch praised the work done by the Paraguayan State, which allowed families to have alternative lands, guaranteed basic services, and an access road that they did not have before.

The IACHR delegation also verified the health, education, and water access services provided by the Paraguayan State for the Sawhoyamaxa community.

The IACHR will use the information gathered on the ground by the delegation to issue new resolutions addressing both the progress in compliance with the sentences and the pending points on which further work must be done.

The IACHR mission in Paraguay concludes today with four more private hearings to monitor compliance with the sentences in Asunción.
