Paraguay recognizes Edmundo González as President-elect of Venezuela

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Paraguayan Government issued a statement recognizing Edmundo González Urrutia as Venezuela’s President-elect and demanding the departure of Ambassador Ricardo Capella and Venezuela’s accredited diplomatic personnel from Paraguay.
These measures were announced following the Venezuelan government’s decision to sever diplomatic ties with Paraguay and withdraw its diplomatic staff.

The Paraguayan government said it «reaffirms Paraguay’s firm and unwavering support for the Venezuelan people’s right to live in democracy.»

Last Sunday, President Santiago Peña held a videoconference with Edmundo González, the winner of Venezuela’s presidential elections in July, and María Corina Machado, the leading opposition figure against Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

During the conversation, President Peña reiterated his support for democracy and González Urrutia’s presidential victory. He noted that independent international analyses of the electoral process and vote counting confirmed that the opposition candidate was the clear winner of last July’s presidential elections.
