President Peña sees Trump as capable of resolving Russia-Ukraine conflicts and aligns with U.S. stance

Asunción, Agencia IP.- President Santiago Peña stated that Paraguay’s government stands for peace and supports ending hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. The president expressed his expectations that Donald Trump will soon find a solution to the war.

On the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, the United Nations General Assembly discussed a resolution condemning the Russian invasion and affirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity. The United States presented a proposal that omitted the latter point, which was later amended by other Security Council members, leading to the U.S., Russia, and Israel voting against the resolution.

Paraguay, Argentina, and 63 other countries abstained from voting on the resolution.

This Tuesday, Peña stated that President Donald Trump «has the strength, conviction, and determination to resolve» the war and that “Paraguay aligns with his proposal.»

«Our position has always been unconditionally in favor of peace. We need this conflict resolved, and we see that the United States truly can do so,» he said to the press.

NATO situation

The Paraguayan President referred to «an intention to maintain the conflict» between Ukraine and Russia. «Many interests go beyond us; there is an ongoing debate about Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). We (Paraguay) have no influence in that matter.»

«We need to understand both perspectives,» President Peña said regarding Russia’s concerns about NATO expanding its borders with the addition of more countries since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
