Paraguay reaffirms the need to promote a more modern and efficient management at the OAS

Asunción, Agencia IP.- In the context of the election of the new Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Víctor Verdún highlighted Paraguay’s strong commitment to strengthening the multilateral system and the need to promote more modern and efficient management within the Organization.

In his speech, Verdún recalled that in June 2024, the government of the Republic of Paraguay presented the candidacy of Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano for the position of OAS Secretary General. This candidacy was based on the country’s firm commitment to the multilateral system and the need to strengthen the leading dialogue platform of the Americas.

He stated that this proposal for the Organization was built on achieving greater institutional relevance, more modern and efficient management, and distancing from polarizing ideological positions.

«Although a different vision for the future of the Organization has prevailed, Paraguay reiterates its firm commitment to the fundamental principles and values of democracy, respect for human rights, security, the rule of law, and the promotion of regional and hemispheric integration,» he said, emphasizing that these principles will continue to guide the country’s actions within the Inter-American system.

The Deputy Minister also expressed his gratitude to all the countries that supported Paraguay’s candidacy with conviction and reiterated that the country will continue working to build a more united and supportive hemisphere.

Finally, Verdún called for unity and wished success to the newly elected Secretary General, who will face the challenge of leading the OAS in this period of institutional challenges.
