Maquila exports reach USD 295 million in the first quarter of the year

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Maquila industry exports totaled USD 295 million in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 20% increase compared to the same period last year, according to a report from the National Council of Export Maquila Industries (Cnime).

The report indicates that this growth not only reflects significant dynamism in exports but also a notable boost in job creation, with 32,538 jobs added by March.

According to Cnime’s latest report, 306 new jobs were registered in March alone, with a year-on-year increase of 7,149 positions, further solidifying the regime as one of the main drivers of the Paraguayan economy.

Maquila exports also saw progress in March 2025, reaching USD 98 million, representing a 14% growth compared to the same month of the previous year.

Origin, products, and markets

Most maquila companies are concentrated in the departments of Alto Paraná, Central, Capital, and Amambay, which account for 91% of the sector’s operations.

Regarding export destinations, 80% of shipments are directed to Mercosur countries, with Brazil being the largest recipient at 63.2%, followed by Argentina (14.3%). Other significant markets include the Netherlands (4.5%) and the United States (3.5%).

In terms of products, auto parts lead the sector, accounting for 31% of total exports, followed by clothing (18%), aluminum (17%), food products (11%), and plastics (7%). These categories make up 84% of maquila industry exports.

Another key point is that 73% of the jobs generated by maquilas are in key sectors such as auto parts, clothing, intangible services, plastics, and chemicals. Additionally, 45% of employment in the maquila industry is held by women.
