Osaka Expo is an opportunity to promote Paraguay and open new markets

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Paraguay is participating in the Osaka World Expo with the theme «Ikigai: Energy that Connects.» The event aims to showcase the country’s opportunities and connect the world with its potential.

President Santiago Peña highlighted the country’s presence at the expo from April to October this year as a showcase and a chance to strengthen commercial ties with Japan and Asian markets.

Each country at the fair has a designated national day. Paraguay’s is scheduled for May 19, when President Santiago Peña is expected to visit with ministers and around 50 business leaders.

«In 2024, I welcomed Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, who told us that Paraguay is an indispensable friend of Japan. That’s why we’re returning the gesture with this visit. A significant delegation of businesspeople and ministers will go to continue strengthening commercial and cultural ties,» the President explained.

On past Tuesday at Mburuvicha Róga, the National Directorate of Paraguay’s Postal Service (Dinacopa) unveiled commemorative stamps celebrating Paraguay’s participation in Osaka. The stamps honor sustainable energy, Paraguayan crafts, its people, and technological innovation represented by the Guaraní-SAT1 satellite, launched into space with Japan’s support.

Trade relations

During the event, Javier Viveros, Deputy Minister of REDIEX, presented data on the trade balance with Japan. Exports total USD 50 million, while imports amount to USD 100 million—relatively low figures that offer room for growth.

In terms of imports, growth could come from food production. «Japan produces only 37% of what its 120 million inhabitants consume, and when it comes to meat, it imports 60% of its consumption,» he noted.

Paraguay’s presence in Osaka is expected to boost its standing as a strategic partner for Japan. «Paraguay is looking to carve out a path in the Pacific economy, and this expo is a great opportunity,» he said.

Sectors with potential include production industries and efforts to create opportunities in the forestry sector, taking advantage of Paraguay’s carbon credit regulations and clean and sustainable energy generation.
