As of the end of May, the maquila sector exports surpass USD 470 million

Asunción, Agencia IP.- In the first five months of the year, the maquila sector exported manufactured goods totaling USD 478 million—USD 52 million more than during the same period in 2024. According to the Vice Ministry of Industry, auto parts, clothing and textiles, and aluminum continue to lead the sector’s exports.

Based on this official data, Paraguayan maquila industries continue to maintain their dynamism, with sustained growth in exports, job creation, and added value, thereby consolidating their role as a key driver of the national economy.

As of the end of May 2025, sector exports reached USD 478 million, representing a 12% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Furthermore, exports in May alone totaled USD 90 million.

The main export categories so far this year include auto parts (34%), clothing and textiles (18%), aluminum products and related manufactures (15%).

There were also exports of food products, plastics, and their manufactures, demonstrating the diversity and competitiveness of the maquila regime in strategic sectors.

Destination of the manufactures

Regarding the market destinations of maquila products, the Vice Ministry highlights that 81% of exports go to Mercosur countries, with Brazil leading at 64%, followed by Argentina with 15%. Other notable destinations include the United States, the Netherlands, Chile, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

Moreover, the sector’s trade balance remains favorable, with exports exceeding imports by 66%. Imports reached USD 288 million as of the end of May, reflecting a strong value-added component in national production.

Employment growth

The maquila regime not only boosts exports but also promotes quality employment. As of May 2025, the sector recorded 33,285 jobs—an increase of 27%. In May alone, 576 new jobs were created.

Of the total, 73% are concentrated in sectors such as automotive parts, apparel, intangible services, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. Additionally, 45% of the jobs are held by women, reaffirming the inclusive role of the regime in the labor market.

Industrial zones

In terms of geographic distribution, 91% of companies with approved maquila programs are located in the departments of Alto Paraná, Central, Capital, and Amambay, according to the Vice Ministry of Industry.
