Asunción, Agencia IP.- Gustavo Leite was sworn in yesterday as Paraguay’s new Ambassador to the United States of America during a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace. The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, administered the oath of office to Gustavo Leite as the new Ambassador of Paraguay to the United States.
In remarks to the press, Leite outlined a series of priorities for his mission, which were agreed upon with the president. One of them is educational, scientific, and technological cooperation.
In this context, he noted that more than 650 Paraguayan students are currently studying in the United States, with 170 pursuing graduate degrees. «We would like to triple that number,» he emphasized.
He also mentioned that he has already spoken with several U.S. congressmen, to whom he expressed his desire to establish a different kind of relationship with the United States—one of «partners.» He announced that efforts would focus on this goal, noting, «Political power in the United States is very strong, and we’ll also work closely with the State Department and the White House.»
At another point, he announced that support would be provided for Paraguayans living in the United States. «The vast majority of Paraguayans didn’t leave because they wanted to—they left because they had to, because they needed to work, to send money to their families. We all want to return to our country to retire. I can already tell you that the Ministry of Housing will offer our migrant compatriots a plan that allows them to pay for a home in installments, so that when they decide to retire, they can come back and do so in our country,» he explained.
