Peña sends the EU-Mercosur agreement to Congress, aiming for Paraguay to be the first country to implement it

Asunción, Agencia IP.- President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, signed on Thursday the message submitting to the National Congress the agreement signed between Mercosur and the European Union, expressing his intention for Paraguay to be the first country to implement it.

During a meeting with representatives of the national private sector, where the scope and benefits of the agreement were explained, the president signed the message and delivered the more than 1,000-page agreement to the president of the Permanent Commission of Congress, Colym Soroka.

«With this, Paraguay becomes the first country to submit the ratification of the EU–Mercosur agreement for consideration by Congress. We strongly wish that Paraguay will be the first country to ratify it, so that it will be the first country to implement it,» the President said after handing over the document.

The Head of State emphasized that the agreement is an important tool for Paraguay to become a competitive country and an opportunity to demonstrate the country’s willingness to go further. «It is an opportunity that must find us working together,» the President said.

He added that, through the EU–Mercosur partnership, Paraguay not only gains access to a major market but also helps open neighboring countries and Mercosur partners to Paraguayan entrepreneurs. «I am confident that we will conquer many markets within our own region as well,» he added.
