Through carbon credits, the government seeks to guarantee investments while conserving resources, says Minister

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Minister of the Environment, Rolando de Barros, indicated that the carbon credit law guarantees legal security for this transaction.

«We guarantee these investments and guarantee that our resources can continue to be conserved, but, at the same time, we are generating an important income for different activities that complement the livestock, agriculture, reforestation, and other activities that we are doing. «It is a perfect complement,» said the Minister during an interview with Paraguay TV today.

The carbon credit certification mechanism is carried out with international certifiers that identify how much carbon is generated in a region and the impact of natural resources: «for one hectare of native forest, reforestation with exotic or native species, or wetlands that is quantified, and a validation process is carried out in situ.»

Once the certification is completed, the credit for compensation is issued, which can be monetized in the stock market or in compliance with the socio-environmental compensation measures many companies and governments have.

The Minister said the objective is for Paraguay to become one of the most attractive places to invest in carbon credits. The Ministry of Environment assists companies that wish to invest in this type of bond in compliance with its ministerial commitment: «generate wealth and decent jobs, without forgetting the greater objective of safeguarding our natural resources,» he said.
