Hohenau: From landfill to world stage of the Rally of Paraguay

Hohenau, Agencia IP.- The roar of engines will replace the silence and abandonment of what was once a municipal landfill. In an unprecedented event, Hohenau is preparing to welcome the world of motorsport at the WRC Rally of Paraguay 2025, transforming a degraded space into a modern international-level circuit.

The site, located in the San José neighborhood and spanning 11 hectares, was a waste dump for years that posed an environmental problem for the community.

Today, thanks to an initiative of the local municipality, it has become the Saltos de Hohenau Circuit, host of the Super Special Power Stage. This decisive stretch will award key points in a world championship still open between four drivers.

The track was designed to deliver a unique spectacle: strategic jumps, technical curves, and even a bridge that adds excitement both for competitors and the public. In addition, the project included the Ñu Poty Indigenous community, which now has a safe, comfortable, and dedicated space to watch the competition — a gesture that reflects the social component of this initiative.

«We are very happy with the arrival of the rally, because it brought not only speed and adrenaline but also an unprecedented environmental transformation,» said engineer Ramón Mallén, environmental sustainability coordinator of the Rally of Paraguay. «It is the first time a municipal landfill has been turned into a Super Special of the World Championship. This model is already drawing interest to be replicated in other parts of the world,» he emphasized.

The impact of the project has caught the attention of international figures. Omar Ávila, advisor to the Rally of Paraguay with nearly two decades of experience in the World Championship, spared no praise: «I have participated in more than 200 WRC events, and I have never seen anything like this. Paraguay and the entire organizing committee should feel proud of having recycled a landfill into a stage that is not only enjoyed during the race but also leaves behind tangible value for the community.»

The transformation was made possible through joint efforts by the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, the Municipality of Hohenau, the National Government, and the Yacyretá Binational Entity. This management model combines environmental sustainability, circular economy, and social inclusion, setting a precedent for large-scale sporting events.

On August 31, when the Power Stage defines the championship standings and places Paraguay at the center of world motorsport, Hohenau will be more than a point on the map: it will be a living example of how vision, cooperation, and innovation can turn an environmental liability into an international showcase.
