Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are accused by the US State Department and the US Attorney General of leading the «Cartel of the Suns» and are formally charged with international drug and arms trafficking.

Maduro’s capture comes in response to growing international pressure and attacks by US forces against boats accused of leaving Venezuela with drugs bound for the United States, in which approximately 115 people died.

Paraguay also joins the international pressure and the accusation against Maduro. «Our country had previously warned about the unsustainable trajectory of Venezuela under the leadership of Nicolás Maduro, head of the Cartel of the Suns (…), declared a terrorist organization by national authorities. The departure of the leader of this terrorist organization must immediately pave the way for the restoration of the rule of law, allowing the popular will expressed at the ballot box to be the sole driving force behind Venezuela’s reconstruction,» the statement concludes.
