«Climate change requires rigorous measures, but at the same time fair,» asserts Peña

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, stated this Monday that climate change calls for rigorous measures, but at the same time, fair, and defended Paraguay’s right not to forgo opportunities for commercial expansion.

In his intervention at the 55th session of the Human Rights Council, which began this Monday, the Paraguayan President addressed the issue of climate change as one of the present urgent challenges.

In this regard, he considered that its approach requires rigorous yet fair measures to address its effects.

«Therefore, a more equitable approach is necessary that considers the realities and specific needs of each country when establishing environmental protection measures,» he stated.

In the case of Paraguay, with CO2 emissions representing only 0.1% globally, with a significant 44% of its territory covered by forests and 15% under the protection of wild areas, «our country should not forgo opportunities for commercial expansion and job creation,» he said.

«We reaffirm our commitment to a balanced and sustainable approach, and at the same time, we will continue to defend our right to development with determination,» asserted the President.

In his speech, the president defended that Paraguay is committed to creating conducive conditions for development, promoting investments, preserving financial stability, and fostering job creation. «We are intensifying efforts to ensure opportunities for everyone,» he claimed.
