Closure of embassies aims at efficiency in Paraguay’s foreign policy

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez indicated that the government’s decision to close five embassies and eight consulates «does not signify a retreat in international policy or in President Santiago Peña’s priority to integrate Paraguay into the world.»

Earlier this month, the Foreign Affair Minister communicated the decision to close embassies in Egypt, Canada, Portugal, Australia, and Switzerland, citing a lack of diplomatic reciprocity. These countries will be served by concurrent diplomatic missions.

«Our country must make decisions regarding diplomatic representations according to the existing budgetary resources for this purpose,» stated Ramírez Lezcano after swearing in new Paraguayan Ambassadors abroad.

«This represents significant savings, but more than savings, what we are pursuing is efficiency,» emphasized Ramírez.

On past Thursday, Juan Ernesto Snead was sworn in as the new Ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Carolin Konther López as the new Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.
