Asunción, Agencia IP.- The National Government is determined to take care of livestock and beef production as one of the pillars of the national productive sector, President Santiago Peña said this Wednesday.
In that sense, he stated that «a great job» is being done to keep the United States market open to the export of beef and that the decision of that country’s Senate was due to » prejudices » and «lack of information.»
Peña referred to the importance of the meat sector for the Paraguayan economy after participating in the opening of the International Seminar «Animal Health and its contribution to the transformation of food systems in the Americas.»
«The countries that are part of the largest producers of animal protein in the world have an enormous responsibility because the population and the demand for food is growing at an important speed,» he said.
In that sense, he encouraged coordinated work between the different health authorities as a fundamental factor.
«In the case of Paraguay, it is clearly a very important sector, one of our pillars of the productive sector and the countryside. We have to take care of it as a strategic sector, and this often depends on coordinated work with the rest of the countries in the region,» Indian.
Regarding beef exports to the United States market, Peña said that the Paraguayan Government is clearly against this decision made by the foreign country’s Senate.
«We believe that it does not have a valid basis; the amount of meat that Paraguay produces within the global context can under no circumstances endanger US producers; it is a small production but of very high quality and a very competitive price,» he said.
He considered that the decision taken in the United States Senate, which is a first step to reverse the authorization of the export of Paraguayan beef to that market, is due «many times to the lack of information and prejudices that we have to face.»
He stated that «great work» is being done to ensure the decision does not prosper in the House of Representatives. He indicated that the national chancellor was in Washington talking about these issues.
«We know that the private sector is also doing a great job of dialogue in the US, and we will continue to do so in all areas. There is no doubt the countryside is a sector and a fundamental pillar of the economic structure of Paraguay », he concluded.
