IPS doctors successfully corrected a cervical fracture in an elderly patient

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Doctors at the Ingavi Specialized Surgical Hospital, under the Instituto de Previsión Social (IPS), successfully corrected a cervical fracture in a 93-year-old elderly patient using a minimally invasive technique. The procedure was successful, given the advanced age of the patient.

Older adults may face risks when undergoing surgical procedures. «Applying a minimally invasive technique at that age is quite a challenge due to the patient’s fragility,» stated Juan Jara, a surgeon at the Ingavi Specialized Surgical Hospital of IPS, referring to the case of a patient who underwent the intervention.

As recounted by the professional, a 93-year-old elderly patient with a diagnosis of a complex traumatic cervical fracture at the high cervical level C1 C2, unstable, underwent minimally invasive surgery for the correction of the unstable fracture under general anesthesia. The procedure resulted in no complications.

The patient, subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), was extubated, remaining lucid, without motor deficits in all four limbs. The patient is expected to be discharged within the next 24 hours, as reported by the Social Provisional.

Doctors Juan Jara (neurosurgeon), Julio Burgos (neurosurgeon), Alexis Báez (neurosurgeon), Osvaldo Molinas (anesthesiologist), and licensed professionals Noelia Aguilera (surgical technologist), Estefanía López (surgical technologist), and Nelly Ruiz Díaz (circulating nurse) were involved in this successful procedure.
