Asunción, Agencia IP.- Less than two months before the end of 2023, Itaipu already remitted USD 450 million to the Paraguayan population in compliance with the obligations established in Annex C of the Treaty. The disbursements are from royalties, energy cession, and payments to the National Electricity Administration (ANDE, by its acronym in Spanish).
From January to October of this year, the binational transferred USD 209 million for royalties and USD 194 million for the cession of energy to the Ministry of Economy and Finances (MEF), which distributes the resources as the national legislation disposed.
The disbursement from Itaipu is essential to support governorates and municipalities nationwide in their programs, investments, and public works, such as school snacks, educational institution renovation, health center strengthening, and road construction.
On the other hand, ANDE transferred USD 47 million as compensation for administration and profit charges. The Entity’s payments allow the public company to have guaranteed and predictable funds to carry out its investments and provide quality electricity service throughout the national territory.
It is important to remember that a significant part of royalties is destined for the expenses of the General Annual Budget and another part that the Treasury transfers to governorates and municipalities. In the specific case of compensation for energy transfer, the resources are incorporated into the National Fund for Public Investment and Development (Fonacide, by its acronym in Spanish). It is also distributed to municipalities and governorates.
The current favorable hydrological conditions and the efficient generation of hydroelectricity were critical to registering an increase in total transfers compared to the same period last year. Until the tenth month of last year, total remittances from Itaipu had reached USD 351 million, which shows a difference of approximately USD 99 million in favor of the Paraguayan State this year and, consequently, the well-being of its citizens.
Regarding the transfers made on October 2023, the royalties were USD 21 million, while the payments for energy cession were USD 20 million. The ANDE received 1,6 million for compensation for administration charges, thus adding approximately 43 million dollars to the disbursements made by Itaipu.
