Peña announces the Embassy of Paraguay in Jerusalem during an encounter with Netanyahu

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, officially announced the transfer of the Paraguayan Embassy to Jerusalem during an encounter with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamín Netanyahu.

The Prime Minister of Israel committed to reopening an Embassy in Asunción for next week: “an event that will relaunch our bilateral relations”, celebrated Santiago Peña.

The encounter occurred in the framework of the period of the General Assembly of United Nations sessions.

Peña manifested his interest in reopening the Embassy of Paraguay in Jerusalem, where it remained for about three months, after assuming the Presidency of the Republic last August.

The diplomatic headquarters was inaugurated on May 21, 2018, by former President Horacio Cartes and translated again to Tel Aviv at the beginning of September by the disposition of ex-President Mario Abdo Benítez.

This transfer responded to the dispositions of the international right that considered Jerusalem a territory in dispute with Palestine, seeking for the eastern part to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.

During a TV interview after assuming the Presidency, Peña indicated that there are solid foundations for the new transfer of the embassy,

After the embassy’s transfer to Tel Aviv, Israel closed its embassy in Asunción and maintained a concurrent embassy from August 2019.
