Peña assures that negotiations on the Itaipu tariff continue and «there is absolutely nothing to speculate about»

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, expressed that «there is absolutely nothing to dramatize or speculate about» regarding Paraguay’s relations with Brazil regarding the negotiation of the Itaipu Binational tariff, which the government authorities initiated with their Brazilian counterparts.

«We continue to converse; there is a negotiation; negotiation is two parties dialoguing and sharing information. We have an excellent relationship with Brazil and President Lula, so there is nothing to dramatize or speculate about. The conversation is a constant conversation, where two parties are trying to reach an agreement,» Peña declared during his visit on Thursday to the National Cancer Institute (Incan) in Capiatá.

The President said the country aims to fight for a negotiation that benefits all Paraguayans. «And obviously, we have not achieved it so far, and well, this is part of a strategy; we are very clear about what we want; we want to fight so that Paraguay can have the greatest possible benefits and that these benefits reach the greatest number of people,» he said.

When asked if there is any truth to certain discomfort with Brazil, the President responded, «No, not at all. Our relationship with Brazil is extensive; it is diverse, and we are working on security matters. What we have recently done regarding security is very important. We have great challenges.»

In that order, he pointed out that they also work closely on different fronts in economic matters. «Today we are only discussing what the tariff is for this year, and we still have to open the discussion about Annex C, which was fulfilled at 50 years last August,» Peña concluded regarding the tariff negotiation with the Brazilian government.
