Peña highlighted the topics discussed in the meeting with the British Foreign Secretary

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, reported that one of the topics discussed yesterday with the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, is the future of relations between Mercosur and the United Kingdom and the significant challenges in foreign policy.

He said, «Paraguay is determined to be a protagonist on the international stage.» Additionally, they discussed strengthening the bilateral relations between Paraguay and the United Kingdom.

«We are strengthening ties with the world,» expressed the president, through his social networks, after yesterday’s meeting at the Government Palace with the British Foreign Secretary.

For his part, British Minister David Cameron highlighted the coincidences between the United Kingdom and Paraguay, emphasizing the shared values ​​between both nations and the cooperation opportunities for the future during the joint press conference with Paraguayan Chancellor Rubén Ramírez Lezcano.

It is the first time a British Foreign Secretary has visited Paraguay after more than 160 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The British minister valued Paraguay’s stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and other situations in the global geopolitical context.

Scholarships for Paraguayans

Regarding the relationship with Paraguay, Cameron assured that there are many partnership opportunities for the future, especially in terms of environmental and sustainability issues. Likewise, he mentioned that cooperation for scholarships to Paraguayans will continue.

It is worth remembering that the British Government offers scholarships to outstanding Paraguayan professionals through the Chevening Program. Similarly, in conjunction with the Graduate Scholarship Program Abroad, Don Carlos Antonio López (BECAL), there is an agreement to grant scholarships under the Chevening-CAL.

The British Foreign Secretary also met yesterday with Paraguayan beneficiaries of the alliances with Chevening FCDO and RMA Sandhurst, reported the British Embassy in Paraguay, which, through its social networks, expressed: Here’s to many more years of collaboration and cooperation!
