Peña highlights historic operation in Tacumbú for a safer Paraguay for families

Asunción, Agencia IP.- In a message addressed to the citizens, the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, emphasized the courage of the security forces for a historic operation to end privileges, complicity, and lack of control within the Tacumbú penitentiary. «We will continue to fight for a safer Paraguay,» he reaffirmed.

Firstly, he highlighted that the Government of Paraguay ended privileges, complicity, and lack of control, especially a prison model that turned prisons into schools of crime.

«With firmness and determination, we have carried out a historic and unprecedented operation to build a safer country for our families,» he expressed.

He assured that for decades, the Tacumbú prison had become a center from which criminal groups operated, planning robberies and distributing narcotics that poison over 90,000 young people in Asunción and localities of the Central department.

He mentioned that just a few hours ago, they struck these groups with their law enforcement forces, dismantling a scheme that allowed them to continue committing crimes from inside the prison mentioned earlier.

The President described the operation as a patriotic mission that resulted in the unfortunate loss of police officer Martín Mendoza, a member of the Lince Group, «who, with great courage and a sense of duty, left us his example of determination to continue fighting against criminal groups,» said Peña.

«Martín represents today the courage and professionalism with which our law enforcement carried out this mission, and we owe them immense gratitude,» stated the Head of the Executive Branch.

Promoting a model that benefits society as a whole

Similarly, Peña reaffirmed that his government is determined to implement a model that benefits society as a whole, supported by a robust reintegration work model. According to him, this will only be achieved by relieving the prisons and cleansing them of elements that corrupt them.

«We will continue to fight for a safer Paraguay, and this action that we are carrying out is an important step towards achieving it,» he added.

Likewise, the Head of State called for the support of the entire country to eradicate the gangs that have brought a lawless lifestyle from outside, which does not represent Paraguay.

In this regard, he admitted that it will not be an easy or brief fight but a decisive one to ensure that Paraguayan families feel safe in their country again. «The decision to carry out this operation was important, but we still have a lot to do; this is just the beginning,» he concluded.
