President highlights strategic alliance with Brazil for “Paraguay to be a more developed country”

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The President of the Republic, Santiago Peña, assured that his counterpart of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, wants Paraguay to be a more developed country, and that is the reason he ratified his predisposition to impulse a positive agenda to include business, infrastructure, security and overall, Itaipu.

Peña provided details about his agenda to the United States last week. It was during a press conference that took place in Mburuvicha Róga. In parallel to his participation in the United Nations General Assembly, the Head of State developed around thirty reunions during his five days in New York, United States. “The agenda has been productive, and it was a fruitful week”, he claimed.

In that sense, the President met with his counterpart from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom he recognized as one of the most important international figures. He assured that they have built a great relationship. “The relation is very positive. Our Chancellor also maintains an excellent relationship with the Brazilian Chancellor, Mauro Vieira; they have known each other for a long time. We are discussing a strategic alliance between Brazil and Paraguay”, stated Peña.

The President affirmed that a developed Paraguay implies “good news to Brazil” and, therefore, the vision of a backward and underdeveloped nation standing next to a regional power will be put to an end. “Lula wants Paraguay to be a much more developed country, and he is putting his whole predisposition to work into a positive agenda to include business, infrastructure, security, among others”, said the President.

The meeting in Brasilia will take place in October

Regarding Itaipu, he reported that this was another of the points addressed during last week’s bilateral meeting. He pointed out that Lula da Silva will undergo surgery. For this reason, the meeting scheduled in Brasilia will take place in the coming weeks.

“The Chancellors are due to confirm a date as soon as possible to reunite, not only the Presidents, but we also put on the agenda the need to bring together the two councils on the Paraguayan and Brazilian sides. We do not have an exact date, and hopefully, it can happen in October; we will go to Brasilia for the first meeting,” he commented.

In the same line, they spoke about a total harmony between the directors of the binational, each defending their government but with a shared vision, which is precisely what Paraguay seeks, considering that Itaipu is a binational entity whose unity is indissoluble. “I am delighted with the dialogue we maintain with Brazil, and this will mean a satisfactory conclusion for both parties,” the Head of State expressed.

Transfer of the Paraguayan Embassy to Jerusalem

At another time, he announced that in November of this year, he would travel to Israel to open the Paraguayan Embassy in Jerusalem. “With the Prime Minister Benjamín Netanyahu, we had an excellent meeting. It was very positive that he could make some time in his agenda for a bilateral meeting with Paraguay”, indicated.

Santiago Peña assured that he is convinced that to the extent that Paraguay relaunches its relationship with Israel, all of this will translate into many benefits for the country. “It will bring many benefits for the youth who desire to capacitate or investigate”. He finalized by saying that it is a field he wants to work in during the following years”.
