The announcement of Monsignor Vincenzo Turturro’s appointment as the Holy See’s new representative in Paraguay came from Pope Francis, confirmed through a press release from the Apostolic Nunciature in Asunción this Friday.

At 45 years old and of Italian origin, Monsignor Turturro had been serving as a first-class counselor in the section for relations with states of the Holy See. He will succeed Eliseo Antonio Ariotti, who resigned upon reaching the age limit of 75 years old.

«I express my gratitude to Monsignor Eliseo Antonio Ariotti for the outstanding work he has done in our country as the representative of the Holy See,» added President Peña in a social media post.

To assume his role in Paraguay, Monsignor Vincenzo Turturro will be leaving the Vatican, where he recently worked in the Secretariat of State in the section for Relations with States and International Organizations. He also served as the personal secretary to Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Monsignor Turturro, ordained as a priest on October 31, 2003, in the diocese of Molfetta-Ruvo-Giovinazzo-Terlizzi, obtained his Licentiate in Dogmatic Theology in 2006, specializing in Theological Anthropology, from the Faculty of Theology of Apulia. In 2009, he earned his Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology, focusing on Ecclesiology from the Pontifical Lateran University.

His diplomatic service includes assignments in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Zimbabwe (2009-2012) and Nicaragua (2012). In 2015, he moved to the Nunciature in Argentina before being appointed to the Section for Relations with States in the Secretariat of State and International Organizations in 2019. Since August 1, 2019, he has served as the personal secretary to Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Monsignor Turturro’s appointment was announced this morning at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Molfetta, Italy, in the presence of the local ecclesial community and the parents of the new Nuncio.
