Starlink’s satellite internet services are now available in Paraguay

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Starlink, owned by businessman Elon Musk, has officially launched its satellite internet services in Paraguay. The high-speed, low-latency internet service offers connectivity across the entire national territory.

The company announced on Thursday through its official account on X, stating, «Starlink is now available in Paraguay, making it the 70th country on Earth where people can connect to high-speed, low-latency internet from space.»

Gustavo Villate, the Minister of Information and Communication Technologies (Mitic) highlighted the significance of Starlink’s arrival in the country, emphasizing the reach of the service that will benefit remote populations beyond Asunción and the metropolitan area.

«For the Government, this means providing a service option in border areas where other types of connectivity do not currently reach, especially for health services, educational centers, and police stations lacking this infrastructure,» Villate remarked.

The Minister noted that Starlink’s service can provide a bandwidth of around 150 megabits, depending on the plan and the type of commercially offered service.

«We received some equipment for testing, and they are working very well with fast speed and very low latency for satellite connectivity,» Villate mentioned in an interview with radio station 730 AM on Friday. «The equipment sent to us is for verifying the scenario where we want to use it,» he added.

Testing equipment in rural schools

Minister Villate also mentioned exploring the implementation of this technology in the Government. He stated that he and his counterpart from the Ministry of Education and Sciences (MEC), Luis Ramírez, are determining where to test the equipment.

«We will probably see it at the beginning of the school year or in open schools. We are contemplating using it first on indigenous communities, farms, public squares, police stations, among others,» he detailed.

In addition to the arrival of Starlink, the Ministry revealed that another projected development is advancing with the portability of digital documents through a partnership with the Directorate of Motor Vehicles.

«We are also working on everything related to fiber optics with operators to advance precisely with the connection of schools and health centers. We are also focused on a large project with the Grupo Lince to provide them with technology to reinforce citizen security,» the Mitic Minister concluded.
