Training abroad opens new horizons in the professional field

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The return to Paraguay of Gustavo Benítez, former scholarship recipient of the National Scholarship Programme «Don Carlos Antonio López» (Becal, by its acronym in Spanish), was quite positive since he participated in a merit contest and was appointed in 2016 as the first Director of Research at the National Competition Commission (Conacom), which opened a new chapter in his professional career.

Gustavo Benítez completed a Master’s in Legal Sciences at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain. He was part of the first group of the self-managed modality of the Program in 2015.

«Living and studying abroad was an enriching experience in every way. The experience provided me with academic knowledge and the opportunity to develop and interact in a culturally diverse context,» he said.

In his opinion, the Scholarship Program represents an invaluable opportunity for any person’s development, especially for the country. The existence of these types of programs not only drives the individual growth of the scholarship recipients but also has the potential to play a vital role in a country’s long-term advancement and development. In addition, it generates highly trained human capital committed to rewarding, at least in part, the knowledge acquired.

The interviewee considered that his experience abroad was a turning point. It allowed him to explore and deepen aspects of his career that he had not previously considered. Upon his reintegration into the work sphere, he had the opportunity to implement a new regulatory framework to promote and defend competition in markets.

He currently works as a professor of Political Economy in the probationary entrance course at the Catholic University of Asunción (UCA, by its acronym in Spanish). Likewise, he was a professor of Antitrust Defense at the UCA Faculty of Law.

With financing from the Fund for Excellence in Education and Research (FEEI), the Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to more than 2,000 Paraguayan postgraduate students abroad from 2015 to date, of which 1,342 scholarship recipients have returned to the country.
