United States guarantees its support to Paraguay in the fight against corruption and impunity

Asunción, Agencia IP.- Authorities of the three branches of the State held a meeting with the United States Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption, Richard Nephew, to address priorities in anticorruption initiatives in our country.

The high official was received by President Santiago Peña at Mburuvicha Róga, accompanied by Chancellor Rubén Ramírez and Chief of Staff Lea Giménez.

Subsequently, an extended meeting was held with the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre, of the Senate, Silvio Ovelar, and of the Judiciary, Luis Benítez Riera, with Attorney General Emiliano Rolón and authorities of the Executive branch.

In a statement at the end of this meeting, Nephew pointed out that for the United States government, the fight against corruption is «a key priority in national security and foreign policy.»

In this priority, «accountability and reducing impunity are essential to address and prevent corruption,» he continued. He also noted that combating corruption will allow Paraguay to expand its economic development and ensure investment while protecting its democracy.

«The United States government will use all the tools at its disposal to advance its anticorruption priorities: building capacity for the judicial system and oversight of accountability mechanisms,» Nephew emphasized.

The Coordinator of Global Anticorruption previously met with civil society organizations to promote initiatives in the field as part of his second official visit to Paraguay until Tuesday, March 5.

Finally, the US official emphasized that his government «speaks with one voice» and works closely with the US embassy and Ambassador Marc Ostfield in our country.
