Las part\u00edculas llamadas puntos cu\u00e1nticos tienen hoy en d\u00eda una gran importancia en la nanotecnolog\u00eda\u00bb, indic\u00f3 en un comunicado la Real Academia Sueca de Ciencias al anunciar el premio.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Los puntos cu\u00e1nticos son part\u00edculas diminutas cuyos electrones (parte del \u00e1tomo que gira alrededor del n\u00facleo) tienen un movimiento restringido lo que afecta a la forma en que absorben y liberan la luz visible y permite obtener colores muy brillantes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Seg\u00fan explicaron, \u00ablos f\u00edsicos sab\u00edan desde hac\u00eda mucho tiempo que, en teor\u00eda, en las nanopart\u00edculas pod\u00edan surgir efectos cu\u00e1nticos dependientes del tama\u00f1o, pero en aquel momento era casi imposible esculpir en nanodimensiones; por lo tanto, pocas personas cre\u00edan que este conocimiento se pudiera poner en pr\u00e1ctica\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sin embargo, a principios de los a\u00f1os 1980, Alexei Ekimov logr\u00f3 crear efectos cu\u00e1nticos dependientes del tama\u00f1o en vidrio coloreado; el color proced\u00eda de nanopart\u00edculas de cloruro de cobre y Ekimov demostr\u00f3 que el tama\u00f1o de las part\u00edculas afectaba al color del vidrio mediante efectos cu\u00e1nticos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, Louis Brus fue el primer cient\u00edfico del mundo en demostrar efectos cu\u00e1nticos dependientes del tama\u00f1o en part\u00edculas que flotan libremente en un fluido; y para 1993, Moungi Bawendi revolucion\u00f3 la producci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica de puntos cu\u00e1nticos, dando como resultado part\u00edculas casi perfectas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00abEsta alta calidad era necesaria para que pudieran utilizarse en aplicaciones\u00bb, se\u00f1alaron e informaron que \u00ablos puntos cu\u00e1nticos ahora iluminan monitores de computadora y pantallas de televisi\u00f3n basadas en tecnolog\u00eda QLED; tambi\u00e9n a\u00f1aden matices a la luz de algunas l\u00e1mparas LED, y los bioqu\u00edmicos y m\u00e9dicos las utilizan para mapear el tejido biol\u00f3gico\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moungi Bawendi naci\u00f3 en 1961 en Par\u00eds (Francia) y se doctor\u00f3 en 1988 en la Universidad de Chicago (EE.UU); actualmente es profesor del Instituto Tecnol\u00f3gico de Massachusetts (MIT).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Por su parte, Louis Brus naci\u00f3 en 1943 en Cleveland (EE.UU) y se doctor\u00f3 en 1969 en la Universidad de Columbia (Nueva York); donde actualmente es profesor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Finalmente, Alexei Ekimov nacido en 1945 en lo que era la Uni\u00f3n de Rep\u00fablicas Socialistas Sovi\u00e9ticas (URSS), se doctor\u00f3 en 1974 en el Instituto F\u00edsico-T\u00e9cnico Ioffe (San Petersburgo, Rusia); fue jefe cient\u00edfico del Nanocrystals Technology Inc., en Nueva York (EE.
