Asunci\u00f3n, Agencia IP.-<\/strong><\/em> In an interview with the program Tribuna<\/em>, broadcast on Paraguay TV, the Japanese Ambassador to Paraguay, Katsumi Itagaki, highlighted the historical strength of relations between the two countries and outlined the main areas of cooperation, trade, and investment for the future.<\/p>\n

The diplomat noted that Paraguay and Japan are celebrating 107 years of diplomatic relations this year, as well as the 90th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants, whose presence, he pointed out, has been key to the country’s economic and social development. \u00abThanks to Japanese immigrants, their children, and grandchildren, today there is a Nikkei community that has significantly contributed to Paraguay\u2019s growth,\u00bb he stated.<\/p>\n

In this regard, he highlighted the harmonious coexistence between Paraguayans, descendants of Japanese immigrants, and other immigrants, as well as the historical role of Japanese cooperation, which has now spanned almost six decades. Among the most relevant contributions, he mentioned improvements to road infrastructure, the strengthening of the health system, and support for technical training through institutions such as the National Service for Professional Promotion (SNPP).<\/p>\n

He also emphasized the current support for technological development, particularly for the Paraguayan Space Agency, through projects such as the launch of the GuaraniSat-2 satellite and the training of human resources in space technology.<\/p>\n

Strengthened relations and a new international projection<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Ambassador also highlighted the impact of high-level visits between the two countries in recent years, including those made by Japanese prime ministers, as well as President Santiago Pe\u00f1a\u2019s participation in Expo Osaka. According to Itagaki, these meetings helped reposition Paraguay’s image in Japan, showcasing a country that extends beyond agriculture and livestock.<\/p>\n

\u00abParaguay is moving towards sectors such as manufacturing, services, and trade. We want to support this transformation process,\u00bb he stated.<\/p>\n

In the trade sphere, Itagaki explained that Japan currently exports mainly machinery and vehicles, while Paraguay exports products such as soybeans and sesame. However, he considered it necessary to move towards greater industrialization and the development of the agro-industry to generate employment and added value.<\/p>\n

Towards a strategic alliance<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One of the main recent advances is the elevation of the bilateral relationship to the level of strategic partners, as well as the push for a future agreement to protect and promote investments between the two countries.<\/p>\n

He also mentioned new cooperation projects, such as road improvements and the streamlining of visa requirements for Paraguayan citizens, which will facilitate academic, cultural, and tourism exchanges.<\/p>\n

Technical cooperation and innovation<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The Ambassador explained that Japanese cooperation has evolved over time, adapting to the country’s needs. In the agricultural sector, for example, efforts have focused on improving the quality of products like sesame, while sustainable horticulture projects are currently being promoted in the department of Itap\u00faa.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the joint work with the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop space technology capabilities. This includes training Paraguayan engineers and installing nanosatellite laboratories in San Lorenzo.<\/p>\n

\u00abThe use of satellite data will allow us to improve agricultural productivity, manage risks such as flooding, and optimize river navigation,\u00bb he explained.<\/p>\n

Later in the interview, Itagaki paid tribute to the first Japanese immigrants who arrived in the country 90 years ago, highlighting the difficulties they faced when settling in colonies such as La Colmena, Pirap\u00f3, and Iguaz\u00fa.<\/p>\n

\u00abThey are the foundation of mutual understanding between Japan and Paraguay,\u00bb he stated, while announcing the organization of various commemorative activities, including cultural events open to the public.<\/p>\n

The diplomat also broadened the concept of the Nikkei community to include not only Japanese descendants but also those who feel an affinity for Japanese culture. \u00abThere are many ‘Nikkei at heart,’ people connected by this feeling,\u00bb he expressed.<\/p>\n

Investment and global challenges<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Finally, the Ambassador addressed the international context and the need to strengthen alliances between countries that\u00a0share values \u200b\u200bsuch as democracy, the rule of law, and the free market.<\/p>\n

In this context, he noted that one of his main objectives is to attract Japanese investment to Paraguay, especially from companies based in Brazil. He highlighted the country’s competitive advantages, including young talent, low taxes, affordable energy, and industrial development potential.<\/p>\n

\u00abWe are promoting meetings with business leaders so they can learn firsthand about the opportunities Paraguay offers,\u00bb he stated, mentioning recent visits by business delegations and meetings with institutions such as the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) and with industry associations.<\/p>\n
