Alliance with Taiwan positions Paraguay in the global race for AI development, Peña highlights

Asunción, Agencia IP.- President Santiago Peña emphasized this Wednesday that the alliance forged with Taiwan during his recent trip to the island, for the construction of one of the world’s largest AI centers, positions Paraguay in the global race for the development of this technology, given its status as a leader in renewable energy generation.

«Today, we dare to dream that Paraguay can be a global protagonist in this race for development that will be artificial intelligence and all technological advancements,» Peña said, explaining the scope of the agreement signed with Taiwan.

He indicated that the first phase of the project envisions building a 10-megabit data center, and that the second phase aims to reach 100 megabits. In a third phase, he said, the goal is to reach 1 gigabit, making it the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center.

«This is obviously an enormous challenge for us. To put this in perspective, this would be like building Itaipu, creating the hydroelectric plant we enjoy today, thanks to that decision made more than 50 years ago. Along the same lines, we are making an ambitious decision today,» said Peña.

He emphasized that the alliance with Taiwan in this area is key, since the Asian country is responsible for producing 90% of the world’s semiconductors, while Paraguay is a major producer of clean and renewable energy.

«Artificial intelligence needs two critical elements. One is electrical energy; it consumes enormous amounts of electricity. The other is semiconductors, microchips, and circuit boards, which are necessary to process that massive amount of data. And that is where we are uniting two countries that are global powers,» Peña highlighted.

The initiative, a 50/50 joint venture between the two nations, aims to position the country as a destination for high-value-added technological investments by leveraging its competitive advantages in energy, macroeconomic stability, and international openness, thereby taking a key step towards an economy based on technology, data processing, and advanced innovation.
