The Italian community celebrates 80 years of the Republic with a free event in Plaza Italia

Asunción, Agencia IP.- The Italian community in Paraguay is preparing to commemorate the Festa della Repubblica Italiana (Festival of the Italian Republic), in a special edition that this year celebrates the 80th anniversary of the proclamation of the Italian Republic. The event will take place next Sunday, May 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., in Plaza Italia in Asunción, with free admission and a wide range of cultural, musical, and culinary offerings.

The event, organized by the Italian Embassy in Paraguay and the Dante Alighieri School, will bring together the Italian community, students, Paraguayan families, and the general public for a day of cultural exchange to strengthen ties between Italy and Paraguay.

The celebration will include a food fair, artistic performances, live music, and cultural activities inspired by Italian traditions. The official opening will be led by the Dante Alighieri School’s Banda Lisa, which will head an inaugural parade to kick off the festivities. Throughout the day, students from the school will participate in various presentations and commemorative ceremonies marking the historic date.

One of the highlights will be a performance by the Italian duo Eugenio Palumbo and Lorenzo Bernardi, who are traveling from Italy to present a traditional music show. Palumbo will play the mandolin, accompanied by Bernardi on guitar.

Gastronomy will be one of the main attractions of the event, with more than 20 stands offering typical Italian dishes, sweets, and specialties. The Parents’ Association of the Dante Alighieri School will have a prominent presence, offering pasta, pizza, and traditional desserts that draw thousands of attendees each year.

The Festa della Repubblica Italiana (Festival of the Italian Republic) commemorates the referendum of June 2, 1946, in which Italy decided, through universal suffrage, to end the monarchy and establish a Republic after World War II. Eight decades after that historic event, the celebration in Paraguay has become a space for cultural exchange that strengthens the identity and ties between the two nations.

As a prelude to the main event, on Sunday, May 31, at 11:30 a.m., the Italian Ambassador to Paraguay, Marcello Fondi, will lead a floral offering ceremony in Plaza Italia (Ygatimí and 15 de Agosto streets) in honor of the Festa della Repubblica Italiana.

The day promises to become a meeting point between history, culture and tradition, celebrating eight decades of the Italian Republic and reaffirming the friendship between Italy and Paraguay through culture, gastronomy and art.
